So, another nail in the coffin of Accutane.  Inflammatory bowel disease is a serious disorder and studies show that Accutane users are almost twice as likely to develop the disease as nonusers.   Inflammatory bowel disease causes the intestines to become irritated and swollen, causing severe cramping, diarrhea, weight loss and sometimes intestinal bleeding.  Along with other side effects including, sun sensitivity, muscle and joint aches and pain, headaches, thinning hair, high cholesterol and liver toxicity, this new link to bowel disease may be the final knockout punch for Accutane.  There have also been links to depression and even suicide in some users.  The data regarding the link between bowel disease and Accutane has yet to be published in a peer-reviewed journal, so some physicians are considering it preliminary.  So, once again, the risk of the benefits of the drug must be measured against the risk of the side effects.  I know that the emotional scars of acne run deep, but the physical ailments left in the trail of Accutane may be worse still.  I feel for acne sufferers who feel they are now are left without an option, but this may force the industry to find an acceptable and safe alternative for the future.  Which, in my opinion, is what they should have done in the first place.  A simple, safe and effective alternative for acne sufferers was the compelling force behind the creation of Kairos Acne Care Solutions and we are proud to be able to help!
