Where is your acne?

Tuesday, December 1st, 2009

Where your acne is located can tell you much about the probable cause.  For example, many people experience perioral acne (acne around the mouth and on the chin) when they are “hormonal.”  Acne that is on or around the hairline and down the sides of the cheeks can be caused by hair products.  To find out more acne facts, visit the Kairos acne help center at http://www.kairosclear.com/acne-help/

Accutane takes a hit in LA Times Saturday, November 7

Tuesday, November 10th, 2009

The need for better and safer acne solutions is now greater than ever. The fight against acne may have just lost one of its heavyweights.  LA Times reports  that Accutane, one of the heavy hitters against acne for more than 25 years, has been linked to another serious side effect, inflammatory bowel disease.  This isn’t the first time controversy has reared its ugly head around this drug.  When it was released in 1982, it was warned on the labels that if Accutane was taken during pregnancy, it would cause serious birth defects.  So serious were these defects, that in 2005 the FDA started a program with the help of doctors and pharmacists to join a risk management registry that would ensure that females taking the medication would not become pregnant.  In the past, the package insert from Accutane showed what appeared to be little alien babies with a warning that this is what you’re baby might look like if you take Accutane while pregnant!  I don’t know about you, but I think if a drug can cause serious harm to a fetus, it stands to reason that the question should be asked by the user, “What’s it doing to my body?”

So, another nail in the coffin of Accutane.  Inflammatory bowel disease is a serious disorder and studies show that Accutane users are almost twice as likely to develop the disease as nonusers.   Inflammatory bowel disease causes the intestines to become irritated and swollen, causing severe cramping, diarrhea, weight loss and sometimes intestinal bleeding.  Along with other side effects including, sun sensitivity, muscle and joint aches and pain, headaches, thinning hair, high cholesterol and liver toxicity, this new link to bowel disease may be the final knockout punch for Accutane.  There have also been links to depression and even suicide in some users.  The data regarding the link between bowel disease and Accutane has yet to be published in a peer-reviewed journal, so some physicians are considering it preliminary.  So, once again, the risk of the benefits of the drug must be measured against the risk of the side effects.  I know that the emotional scars of acne run deep, but the physical ailments left in the trail of Accutane may be worse still.  I feel for acne sufferers who feel they are now are left without an option, but this may force the industry to find an acceptable and safe alternative for the future.  Which, in my opinion, is what they should have done in the first place.  A simple, safe and effective alternative for acne sufferers was the compelling force behind the creation of Kairos Acne Care Solutions and we are proud to be able to help!
